Al-Wasal – Madiha Al-Sulaimani | Written by Fahad Al-Zuhaimi His Highness Sayyid Theyazin bin Haitham Al Said, Minister of Culture, Sports, and Youth, issued a ministerial decision to officially establish the Omani Committee for Aerial Sports, chaired by Dr. Ahmed bin Said Al-Jahouri, with Said bin Nasser Al-Amri appointed as secretary, and members including Khalil bin Obaid Al-Jabri, Mohammed bin Ali Al-Jaradi, Khalid bin Rashid Al-Kalbani, and Ahmed bin Zahir Al-Alawi. The decision stipulates that the committee will manage all administrative, financial, and technical aspects of aerial sports in accordance with approved regulations and budgets. Dr. Al-Jahouri expressed the committee’s appreciation for the Ministry’s efforts in developing sports and thanked the Minister for supporting youth and sports through the establishment of this committee. He added that the committee will oversee internationally recognized aerial sports, including air shows, paragliding, hot-air ballooning, drone racing, hang gliding, and parachuting. He emphasized the importance of having an organized body to represent Oman in continental and international federations, regulate flight sites, manage teams and amateur pilots, supervise commercial paragliding sites, set training and equipment standards, and organize official events to promote tourism. The committee’s objectives include developing regulatory laws, training skilled teams to represent Oman internationally, promoting aerial sports domestically and abroad, contributing to tourism, establishing schools with global standards, and participating in regional and international meetings. Dr. Al-Jahouri also highlighted plans to develop national capabilities, create a database of aerial sports practitioners, enhance tourism-related economic returns, encourage innovation such as drone and glider inventions, provide community services like rescue and awareness programs, and create jobs including trainers, assistants, and aerial guides. Following its establishment, the committee held its first meeting chaired by Dr. Al-Jahouri to welcome members, discuss operational mechanisms, review a roadmap to develop trained teams, and outline laws and regulations to govern aerial sports in Oman.
